Background of the Study
Digital media has revolutionized how young people engage with civic issues, providing platforms for information sharing, dialogue, and activism. In Lokoja Local Government Area (LGA), Kogi State, digital media channels such as social media, blogs, and online forums have become critical tools for youth participation in governance and community development. According to Okafor and Adeyemi (2024), digital media fosters civic engagement by increasing access to information, amplifying marginalized voices, and enabling real-time interaction with policymakers. However, challenges such as misinformation, digital divides, and apathy can limit its impact. This study examines the influence of digital media on youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA, focusing on its benefits, challenges, and transformative potential.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the proliferation of digital media, youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA remains inconsistent. Factors such as limited digital literacy, unequal access to technology, and the spread of misinformation hinder effective participation. This study seeks to investigate the influence of digital media on youth civic engagement in Lokoja LGA, identifying barriers and opportunities for fostering active citizenship.
